Follow? 'Click', or be 'clicked'?

Every day, without fail, there is a thread on the Blogger Help Group, asking for ways to promote a blog. Sure, there are ways which will do this, and do that, get your blog seen here, and there, but, without a doubt, the most important feature of blogging, and gaining readership, is to have interesting content - and to visit other blogs, comment, and show YOUR interest in THEIR blogs! A two-way street is a better way to communicate, and, afterall, that's basically what we're doing, isn't it? Communicating!

That's where 'Following' is a major tool. It allows you to simply 'click', or be 'clicked'! How much of a boost to your confidence would it be to see more and more people - fellow bloggers - linked to your blog through the Followers gadget - each day, or week?

I have been fortunate. I have a large range of blogs on different topics, and although I don't have 50, or 100 'followers' yet, it's starting to grow. I have some followers who have very interesting blogs, and I have some followers who don't have blogs - they're just readers - but, as important as any. Where possible, and of interest to me, I follow their blogs, in return. I also look at the blogs they follow, too. That's how it goes.

With the Following gadget on my blogs, I open my blogs up. Yes, people could go to the trouble of adding a site-feed to get updates of my articles, no worries there, but it also takes up space on their sidebar, or they have to use a reader, like Sage, or Google Reader. But, now, they have more choice! I like that!

Be warned, though, as my friend Nitecruzr says; " ...You are judged by what blogs you follow."

Do you have any choice in who Follows your blog?
  • Yes, you do. It's called 'Block'. 'They' have the same choices as you do.
What if you like a blog, but don't want to be 'shown' as a Follower?
  • Then, Follow 'anonymously'! Easy.
Do you have to Follow a blog which is Following you?
  • No! You don't. It's your choice.

What I am saying here, folks, is that Following gives you the choice to increase your readership, increase your knowledge on blogging, increase your circle of friends and maintain a high-peak of interest. Yes, interest. After three years of blogging, I have often asked myself; "What's it all about, Alfie? Is this all worthwhile? Why haven't I got as many readers as that blog - mine is just as good?" Then, someone, or something, changes my direction, and the interest is re-generated. Such a catalyst, for me, is Following.

Click, or be clicked. It's YOUR choice! It's also your choice to use this feature intelligently, and properly!

Testing Followers - Feeds Disabled

I tried to 'Follow' a blog, just after the release of the feature, 'Followers'. It wouldn't let me and gave me a message along the lines of; "Could not detect a 'feed' for this URL".

What I did was to 'Add' the Blog URL, from the 'Manage' Option.

I am currently testing various versions of disabling 'feeds' to ascertain what this might be. At present, I am not having luck. I selected 'Advanced Mode' on the Settings - Site Feeds screen, and selected 'None' for feeds...

Then, using an account other than one associated with this Blog, I was able to create a Follower feed by adding this Blog's URL on the 'Manage' option. So, it isn't the Settings - Site Feeds that gives the "Could not detect a 'feed' for this URL" message in the first image, above.

I know you can't Follow a private blog, and this 'notice' probably results from the Blog Owner not having enabled his/her blog for 'Add your Blog to our Listings?' which is an option on 'Settings - Basic'.

OR, and this is most likely, the Blog has a 'Re-Directed' Feed. In this case, it is necessary to obtain that re-directed feed URL, to 'Add' the 'Follower' gadget feed, from your Dashboard's 'Reading List'.

To achieve this, simply this, or to find out what the 'Feed' URL is, add 'atom.xml' after the Blog URL. This will give you the Feed URL Live Bookmark pop-up. Add that 'Bookmark' to your Bookmarks, or Favourites, and use that URL (the Feed URL) in your 'Reading List' Add, for 'Follower'.

Testing - Following with Chinese characters

This test for adding 'Following' is for a Blog with a mixture of English and Chinese (Traditional) characters in the Title. I am trying to re-create a 400 series (Bad Request) code Error, or a 404 (Not Found) code Error, which a Blogger, Jane, was inquiring about, on Blogger Help Group. Jane's Blog Title was:

"Reddie's Page | 鸿屋"

Starting this Test with the Blog Language set to English, the Profile Language set to English, and the Blog Title set to:

" My Follow Testing Blog - 我的測試博客 "

Following loaded - no problems.

Then I started to wonder why...

Then it finally tweaked. In Jane's Blog Title, she had her English characters and her Chinese characters, separated by a "concatenation" ( Shift \) which produces an "|". I substituted this for the 'hyphen' in my Blog Title, and guess what? That's correct - a 400 Error - Bad Request! (Eureka)

When I switched it back to the 'hyphen' again, I could 'Follow' this Blog without the 400 Error.

The reason I tweaked to the concatenation, was that I tried to save the URL of this new Testing Blog, and Post, to my Notepad, which I do for all Blogs and Posts - and got this...

Apparently, Blogger Known Issues is reporting a similar problem for some readers, when trying to 'Follow' Blogs which have quotation marks in their Titles ... Sept. 23.

Testing - Following

I am Testing 'Following' - again.

This time, I am interested in whether the Blog Language, which in this case, is set to French, and the Blog Title (in French) and URL (in English), will have any affect on the 'Following' Gadget, as it is only available for English Blogs. This Blog doesn't have accents, so I think the 'fun' will start, though, with my next Test - an English Blog with a highly accented Title in French. The title seems to be the problem from the other day.. see: *below.

The Create a Blog will NOT accept certain characters, so I doubt an accented URL will be allowed, anyway. We'll find out.

Why am I concentrating on the Title? The reason is that both Chuck and I believe that the characters in the Title have a large bearing on whether 'Following' will work on a Blog, as discovered *yesterday.

Naturally, when I tried to add the 'Following' Gadget, I couldn't. The Blog Language (Settings - Formatting) is set to French. 'Following' is only available for English Blogs. see: 'Exp
érimental'

Next, with the Blog Language still set to French, I changed the Profile Language, to English, although this was solely for my benefit, as my High School French isn't that good, anymore. I could then 'Add' Blogs to 'Follow', but this still isn't the actual 'Following', per se.

Next, I changed the Blog Language to English, and added 'Following' with no problems.

I could even click on 'Follow this Blog' from Roberto's Report Blog

So, a French Blog, even though the Profile Language can still be in French, MUST have the Blog Language set to English, in order to have 'Following' operate. If you change the Blog Language setting back to French, you lose the Following - until you change it back to English, again!

Summary: The French Blog, with the plain French title, had no problem adding 'Following' as a gadget, if the Blog Setting Language was changed, and maintained, in English. The Blog could still be used as a French Blog (- if I could write and read it!) and the Profile Language can be maintained in French, as well. The reason the Title had no bearing on the Test, I'm sure, is because there were NO non-English characters, such as accents, or symbols, contained in it.
